Vertigo Theatrics began as a brainstorm of ideas between our Executive Artistic Director, Ted Valley, and a small group of confidants and friends. The plan was to offer entertainment services, in the form of Mystery Dinner Theatre, to businesses for a fee that would allow area actors to receive a small stipend. The venture was successful and blossomed into the dream of finding a permanent home to host Dinner Theatre. After several years of negotiations with The Masonic Temple Association of Flint, the dream became a reality. Vertigo Productions opened the doors to Flint's new theatrical venue in September 1997 with the Flint premiere of 'Laughter On The 23rd Floor'. We have not stood still since that day!
We began with two shows a year and have grown to offer a "full season" of theatrical entertainment. For seven years, we offered non-musical performances, in the main auditorium at The Masonic Temple. In 2004, we performed our first musical, 'A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline'. We followed that with 'I Do, I Do' and in February, 2007, hosted 'The Who's Tommy'. With our tenth season, we now present two musicals, each season. In Season 10 it was 'Swinging On A Star' in September, 2007, and 'Ain't Misbehavin'' in February, 2008.
In 2004, we proudly opened a new venue at our home facility. Through further negotiations with The Masonic Temple Association, we were granted permission to use a second auditorium in the building. We opened our 'Studio On the Third Floor' series with two one act plays, 'The Gift of the Magi' and 'When God Comes For Breakfast, You Don't Burn The Toast'. These are non dinner shows (dessert is served at intermission) that allow us to stretch our creativity and talented actors with more "avante guarde" performances. These are shows that speak more to the "human condition".
Also during our 2004 "off season", we stepped outside of our home facility to offer Flint's first Shakespeare In The Park festival, featuring performances at Flint's beautiful Kearsley Park. And just for fun, we added a small Renaissance Faire dubbed Gilkeyshire.
