The Who's Tommy

THE STORY: After witnessing the accidental murder of his mother's lover by his father, Tommy is traumatized into catatonia, and as the boy grows, he suffers abuse at the hands of his sadistic relatives and neighbors. As an adolescent, he's discovered to have an uncanny knack for playing pinball, and when his mother finally breaks through his catatonia, he becomes an international pinball superstar.

The classic '60s rock opera by The Who was translated to the stage by theatrical wizard Des McAnuff into a high-energy, one-of-a-kind theatrical event. The exhilarating score is timeless in its youthful appeal, giving the show a cross-generational appeal that has made it a smash-hit in high schools and colleges around the world. A small rock band orchestration and spectacular original Broadway production slides allow you to capture the excitement of the New York production on a modest budget!

PRODUCER'S / DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Thank you very much for being here to attend our production of Tommy. We are so glad to be able use this show as a fundraiser for the Johnny Burke Children's Foundation (JBCF). A big part of our mission is to give back to the community. Working with great organizations such as the JBCF is an excellent way for us to do just that.

As I have been discussing this show with many people, it is interesting to hear the varying interpretations. The music in this show is now considered "classic." Interesting to hear isn't it, "baby-boomers"? Regardless, this show goes deeper than just great music. Many people are familiar with the music, but less familiar with the story behind it. Glancing into this character's life, we need to take special care to be involved in the story. It is so easy to get lost in The Who's music and enjoy it for just that value. But there are other values addressed in this show as well. Namely, how do we capture happiness? Is it in our own minds, or dependant on the people around us, who influence our lives? This is just one of the questions begging an answer as we watch this young man's story unfold.

Another value that I've personally received from this show are the people. There are several different motivators that help keep a show going. One of the most important is the dedication and bond of the cast and crew. Rarely, does that magic begin at the very first night of rehearsal. The level of dedication of people involved in this show has truly humbled me as a director and producer. We may not have the huge broadway budget and special effects but, this show has something worth much more than that. This show has the heart of the entire cast and crew. The undertaking for us at Vertigo to do a show of this magnitude is obviously a great challenge. This fine group of people have been there to see it through. Most often, the director's job is also that of a cheerleader. I graciously admit that all the individuals gathered for this show have been not only an encouragement to each other but, most specifically to me. I am very grateful to them for their gift to me. The gift of themselves.
